Sr. M. Edwardine Black, RSM

BLACK, Sister Mary Edwardine, 86, a Sister of Mercy entered eternal life on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Kent Hospital, Warwick.  

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Baxter) Black.  Sister was pre-deceased by sisters, Margaret E. Guncheon, Mary E. Doherty, Evelyn M. Andreas, and Catherine F. Dexter and brothers, Edward J. and Charles T. Black.  Sister Mary Edwardine entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1948 and professed perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1954.

As an elementary educator, Sister Edwardine was regarded highly by students and families in the parochial schools of Providence, Newport, West Warwick, and Pawtucket where she served at St. Mary’s as principal from 1973-1995.  Sister received the Centennial Award from St. Mary’s as well as the State of R.I. Board of Regents Outstanding Achievement Recognition for service to the children of Pawtucket.  Sister Edwardine also taught for five years in Central America at Holy Redeemer Boys School.  Upon her retirement, Sister Edwardine volunteered her services at St. Kevin Parish in Warwick.

Visitation will be held at St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm with a Mercy Prayer Service at 4:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Kevin Church on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 9:00 am.  Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Smithfield Ave., Pawtucket.  Information and condolences please visit: www.galloglyfuneralhome.com
