Sister Norma Orme, RSM

Orme, Sister Norma, 99, (Sister Mary Jocelyn, RSM) died on February 5, 2015 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland.

She was the daughter of the late Stuart and Charlotte (Bowdoin) Orme.  Sister Norma entered the Sisters of Mercy Community on September 8, 1934 and professed vows on August 15, 1940.

Sister attended Cleary School and St. Xavier’s in Providence.  She pursued higher academia at Catholic University, WA.  Sister Norma taught at Tyler and Cleary schools as well as at St. Xavier’s in Providence and St. Mary’s Academy-Bay View.

In September 2014, Sister Norma celebrated 80 years of Religious Life as a Sister of Mercy.  Twenty of those years were dedicated to the people of Belize in high school education.  Truly, students of St. Catherine Academy were her girls and how proud she was to claim and show them off to her peers in Rhode Island.  For a short time, Sister also served in Honduras as teacher, principal, and instructor of Spanish.  Upon her return to the States in the late seventies, Sister was on the staff at Salve Regina in Newport as Assistant Professor of Modern Language.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11:00 am in Mount St. Rita Chapel, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland.  Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.  Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.  Donations in memory of Sister Norma may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 (online at www.sistersofmercy.org/northeast) or Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, RI 02864.
