Charpentier, RSM, Sister Mary Amelia, 88, formerly Esther Charpentier, a Sister of Mercy for 72 years, died on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Amelia (Decelles) Charpentier and the sister of the late Constance Moriarty and Edward Charpentier. She is survived by her brother, Henri; two sisters-in-law, Carol and Mary Francis; two nieces and five nephews.
During her years as a Sister of Mercy, she served in many capacities. In her early years, she taught in various schools in the Providence Diocese. In 1962 Amelia began her 28 years of service to the people of Belize in Central America. This mission always remained dear to her heart. Her love for the Belizian people showed itself through her teaching and the mentoring of young teachers. Beyond the structure of the classroom, her joy was to visit and deliver meals to people in neighboring villages. When Amelia returned to the United States in 1990, she continued her work with families served by Dorcas Place and Providence Family Learning Center. In her quiet gentle way, she was truly a Sister of Mercy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021 at St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the church followed by a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
