Gross, RSM, Sister Mary Viola, 86, a Sister of Mercy for 69 years, died on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Miriam Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Susan (D’Andrea) Gross. Her parents were faithful to their religious beliefs and willingly gave three daughters to religious communities. Viola was the sister of the late Sister Mary Susan Gross, RSM, and the late Sister Mary Dolores Gross, OP Contemplative. Sister Viola leaves two first cousins, Eleanor Majerus of Florida and Edward DiPrete of Rhode Island.
Sister Viola spent her years in ministry as a dedicated teacher, educator and librarian in both the Dioceses of Fall River and Providence. She was a quiet, private person but somehow always exhibited a sense of humor. During her retirement time spent at Franklin Court in Bristol, she appreciated the care given her by the staff and reciprocated with interest in them and their activities.
Sister Viola died as she lived, peacefully and quietly, to reunite once again with her family and the God whom she served while on earth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, beginning with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
