Gaudreau, RSM, Sister Phylis, (formerly Sister Denise Marie), 79, a Sister of Mercy for 57 years, died on Wednesday, September 28, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Muriel (Depot) Gaudreau. She is survived by a brother Denis and his wife Barbara, a nephew, Jason, his wife, Colleen, their children, Michayla, Joseph, and Jacob, her niece Elizabeth and wife, Rosemary.
Sister Phylis was a creative person who used her gifts and talents for very young children, not only locally but also in the Sisters of Mercy mission in Belize, Central America. While there she founded the Catholic Diocese Child Development Center, the first of its kind in Belize. True to the spirit of empowerment of local residents, Phylis trained and hired a staff of Belizean women.
Phylis was a lover of art and an artist herself. She also enjoyed theater, especially the local Community Players of Pawtucket. She will be remembered as a quiet and unassuming artist who brought a sense of beauty to the lives of children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at St. Aidan-St. Patrick Church, 1460 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, RI.
