Hickey, RSM, Joan (formerly Sister Marie Joanne) 88, a Sister of Mercy for 71 years died on Monday, December 7, 2020, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Irene (Brennan) and sister of the late Carol Clarke and Robert J. Hickey. She is survived by her brother, Joseph A. Hickey and several nieces and nephews.
Sister Joan was a woman of varied talents and abilities. In her early years of ministry, she taught in the Diocese of Providence Schools. Her students were thrilled to have a young, vivacious and beautiful Sister as their teacher.
Following her teaching career in Rhode Island, she worked for 11 years in Central America in the countries of Belize and Honduras. Having a scientific background, she was a blessing. She organized the first Science Fair in both countries. She worked with a Jesuit priest to set up a standardized testing system in Belize. Upon returning to the States, Sister Joan continued to answer the call to serve. She became a Physician’s Assistant working for 37 years in the Maryland area. Her ministry in this capacity was noted in the second edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care.
Sister Joan’s final days were spent in retirement at Mount St. Rita Health Centre. After caring for so many people in the Health Care field, it was now time to accept rather than give.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland beginning with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland will be private.
