Sister Geraldyn McGreevy, RSM Obituary

Sister Marie Geraldyn McGreevy, R.S.M., age 95, died peacefully at Bethany Home in Providence, Rhode Island on February 9, 2026.  She was a Sister of Mercy for 74 years.

Born Mary, she was the daughter of John G. and Catherine (Appleton) McGreevy of Cranston Rhode Island.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Catherine also a Sister of Mercy.  She graduated from St. Xavier Academy in Providence and earned a Bachelor of Science from Bryant University and a Master of Arts in Education at Catholic University.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cumberland, Rhode Island on September 8, 1951.  Her first ministries were teaching high school in both the Diocese of Providence and the Diocese of Fall River.  The greater part of her ministry involved financial administration work.  She was the Registrar at St. Mary Academy, Bay View. She served on the Provincial Council of the Sisters of Mercy of Providence.  She was an assistant principal for finances at Mercymount Country Day School in Cumberland and finance director for the Family Outreach Center in Providence.  She would say that these ministries removed her from working with people but those who worked with her appreciated the care and concern for the people and ministries she brought to her work.

She enjoyed being with people, both in Bristol and recently at Brentwood by the Bay where she enjoyed conversations with others and participating in the various activities.  She loved musical performances and dining out especially where good beef was served.  Before her retirement she would often drive sisters to appointments. In her retirement she enjoyed going out with others and as often as possible attended all community meetings and events.

At her profession she chose, “In His Will is My Peace.”  That peace she strove for in her carefulness about being prepared for all circumstances.  She planned the ceremony for her funeral.  The readings and hymns she chose emphasized the depth of the love of Christ for us and that gives the knowledge to grow daily in the love of God and the service Christ calls each one to give one another.

She spent her last days at Bethany Home, a place where she had rehabbed at different times and whose staff she appreciated for their kindness as well as expertise.  When she met her Creator she probably went with a well-prepared sense of how much she had been loved and cared for by God through the many people in her life.  God would probably thank her for her compassion and concern both for people and for the finances to continue ministries of service.  We will miss you, Geraldyn.

The funeral will be held at Saint Aidan and Saint Patrick Church, 1460 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and a Mercy prayer service at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m.  Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, 261 W. Wrentham Road, Cumberland, RI immediately following the Liturgy.
