Sister Carol Jussaume, RSM Obituary

Sister Carol Jussaume, RSM, age 78, a beloved Sister of Mercy of the Americas for 59 years, entered into eternal life on July 13, 2026.

Born on May 4, 1948, to Augustin and Ruth (Taylor) Jussaume, Carol answered God's call to religious life. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1966, and joyfully professed her vows on August 15, 1975. Throughout nearly six decades as a Sister of Mercy, she lived her vocation with grace, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

Sister Carol graduated from Holy Family High School, New Bedford, MA and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Salve Regina University, followed by a Master of Arts degree from Boston College.

The motto inscribed on her profession ring, "Your presence, O Lord, I seek," beautifully reflected the way she lived each day—with faith at the center of her life and a heart always open to God's guidance.

Throughout her ministry, Sister Carol shared her many gifts in education, communications, and missionary service. She served as Communications Director for the Mercy Provincialate and later as Communications and Development Director at Family Outreach Center in Providence. Her missionary spirit led her to Lima, Peru, where she volunteered on the staff of the Center Retreat House. She also inspired countless students as a faculty member at Bishop Stang High School and Bishop Gerrard High School.

Perhaps nowhere did Sister Carol leave a more lasting impression than at St. Mary Academy – Bay View, where she devoted many years as Chair of the English Department and as a beloved teacher. She challenged her students to think deeply, write thoughtfully, and appreciate the power of words, while always encouraging them with kindness, patience, and genuine care.

Sister Carol will be remembered for her warm spirit, quiet wisdom, deep faith, and the lasting relationships she formed throughout her life. She believed in the transformative power of education, communication, and Mercy, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She also found great joy in life's simple blessings, including spending time with her nephew Jeremy's two Goldendoodles, Marseilles and Moët.

She was predeceased by her parents, Augustin and Ruth (Taylor) Jussaume, her sister, Beth L. Jussaume, and her nephew Gregory McGuire.

She is survived by her sister, Laura McGuire of Wareham and Laura's companion, Wayne Wescott; her brother, Gerard Jussaume, and his husband, David Ecklund, of Florida; her nephews, Jeremy Dias of Fairhaven and Troy Wilson of Dartmouth and his fiancée, Tiffany Marques; as well as her great-nephews and great-niece.

The funeral will be held in the chapel at St. Mary Academy-Bay View, 3070 Pawtucket Ave., Riverside, RI on Friday, July 24, 2026.  Please park behind the Academy.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and a Mercy prayer service at 9:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River, MA
