Sister Barbara Foley, RSM, (formerly Sister Mary Clarella), a Sister of Mercy for 75 years died peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI.
She was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Hamilton) Foley. She was predeceased by her brothers, William, John, Lloyd, Lawrence and sisters, Catherine Burns and Irene Curtis. She is survived by nephew William (Mary) Foley as well as many other relatives and close, faithful friends.
She is remembered as a quiet sister, as well as one who enjoyed her ministry of education as both teacher and director of religious education at St. Teresa School in Pawtucket. She began her teaching ministry in New Bedford, MA followed by Westerly, Woonsocket and finally to St. Teresa’s where she was a member of the parish faculty and staff for 36 years. In 2016 she moved to Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland where she immersed herself in the ministry of prayer and presence for all residents and staff. Sister Barbara’s quiet, generous and cheerful presence will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The Sisters of Mercy are grateful to all staff at Mount St. Rita Health Centre who provided Sister Barbara with a safe environment and in the spirit of the founder Catherine McAuley, tender compassionate care, in sister’s final days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2022, at St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
