Richard Edmond “Dick” Cooney, 73, of Cranston, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday morning, September 28, 2025.
He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen M. “Kathy” (Hazelwood) Cooney. Dick and Kathy shared nearly forty years of marriage—a partnership rooted in love, laughter, and resilience—until her passing in 2020. Born in Providence, a son of the late Edward W. and Mary Marjorie (Sheridan) Cooney and spent the majority of his life in Cranston.
Dick was a proud and hardworking pipefitter with General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division, working in both Groton and Quonset for over thirty-five years. He retired in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, craftsmanship, and camaraderie among colleagues.
Beyond his work, he found his greatest joy in family. He was a loving and supportive father to his three children: Michael E. Cooney and his wife Mikala Watson, Ashley Cooney and her husband Josh Ragosta, and Bryan A. Cooney. His heart was especially full when spending time with his cherished granddaughter, Sidney L. Cooney. He also shared a special bond with his two dogs, Yogi and Penny, who were his loyal companions in later years.
A true sports enthusiast, Dick proudly cheered for the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and the Boston Celtics—teams he followed passionately throughout his life.
He is survived by his children, granddaughter, and his siblings, Thomas Cooney and Margie Cooney. He was predeceased by his brother Edward W. Cooney, Jr., and sisters Kathleen Cooney, Maureen Cooney, and Patricia Clifford.
