Raymond “Fergy” M. Fernandes, 94, of West Warwick, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, July 27, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Irene M. (Belanger) Fernandes, with whom he shared a devoted and joyful marriage of sixty-nine years.
A lifelong resident of West Warwick, Fergy was born to the late Manuel and Beatrice (Laurence) Fernandes. Known for his warmth, work ethic, and quiet strength, he dedicated many years of service to the Arkwright Company before retiring. Never one to sit still, he continued to share his love of the outdoors as a greenskeeper at Midville Golf Club, where he found joy and camaraderie among colleagues and golf enthusiasts alike.
Fergy was a true New Englander at heart—an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, he rarely missed a game. His faith was a guiding force in his life; he was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony Church and a proud lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Society.
Above all, Fergy’s greatest legacy is the love he gave to his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife Irene; two loving sons, Raymond R. Fernandes and his wife Paula, and Stephen A. Fernandes and his wife Bernadette; three cherished grandchildren, Lindsey Rae Gilmore (Mike), Anthony Fernandes (Samantha), and Emily Rae Fernandes (Max) and three great grandchildren, Mackenzie Briggs, Christian Briggs and William Fernandes. He is also survived by his dear sister Irene V. Simas; sister-in-law Buffy Fernandes; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Fergy was predeceased by his brother, Norman Fernandes; his daughter-in-law, Lynda (Santos) Fernandes; and his brother-in-law, Arthur Simas.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, One Sunset Avenue, West Warwick. Interment will follow at Acotes Hill Cemetery in Chepachet.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Fergy’s memory to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, 200 Niantic Avenue, Providence, RI 02907, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
