Michael Herchen, PPD (Ret.) Obituary

Michael S. Herchen, PPD (Ret.), 62, of Smithfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, July 7, 2025, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Tiffani V. (Smith) Herchen. Together they shared thirty-four wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and deep companionship.

Born in Providence, he was the devoted son of the late Alice J. (Kane) Herchen. A resident of Smithfield since 1997, Michael's life was marked by a deep sense of service, loyalty, and love for his family and community.

Michael served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1979 to 1981, continuing his dedication through service in the Marine Corps Reserves for many years thereafter. In 1986, he began his distinguished career with the Providence Police Department as a graduate of the 50th Providence Police Academy. Over the course of his career, he served in various divisions with integrity, courage, and commitment, retiring in 2004. He was deeply respected by both his fellow officers and the citizens he protected. Following his retirement, Michael brought his work ethic and reliability to Rhode Island College, where he was employed in the Facilities Department since 2014.

Michael was a proud member of the Providence Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 3, and actively involved in several local veterans’ organizations. A lifelong New England Patriots fan, he rarely missed a broadcast on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Known as a true handyman, there was little he couldn’t fix—be it plumbing, heating, or painting. He had a passion for yard sales, flea markets, and hunting for a good deal, often delighting in the thrill of the find.

An 80’s rock ‘n’ roll enthusiast—"the only real music," he would say—Michael could often be found playing classic hits while working on a project or relaxing at home. He was always ready with a prank or a joke to make someone smile. A dog lover through and through, he had a special way with animals, and dogs were naturally drawn to his calm and gentle presence.

Above all, Michael was a devoted family man. In addition to his wife Tiffani, he leaves behind his three loving children: Mickayla Herchen, Michael Herchen, and Stephen Herchen. He is also survived by his four siblings: Richard Herchen, Russell Herchen, Marie Goodman, and Vincent Herchen, as well as his mother-in-law, Agnes R. Smith. Michael was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Herchen.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Memorial Gathering on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 3:00–5:00 p.m. in the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick. Interment will be private.
