Marjorie T. (Mullooly) Murphy, at the age of 93, passed away peacefully on the morning of March 1, 2025, at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Providence, Marjorie was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. Murphy, II, who passed away in 1999. She was the daughter of the late Martin J. and Mary E. (Murphy) Mullooly. Marjorie spent many cherished years as a resident of North Providence, where she touched the lives of many.
Marjorie's early education began at Blessed Sacrament School in Providence, followed by her graduation from St. Patrick's High School. Her passion for helping others led her to the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in the Class of 1951. This marked the beginning of a long and dedicated career in nursing.
Marjorie's professional journey saw her serving as Head Nurse at Rhode Island Hospital, where she was not only a caregiver but also a mentor, tasked with training the next generation of nurses. She continued her career as a nurse at Fogarty Hospital in North Smithfield, working part-time so she could devote time to her three sons. Her commitment to nursing extended beyond the hospital walls, Marjorie often took care of neighbors and the elderly, even after long shifts at the hospital and well into her retirement.
Marjorie's dedication to her profession was matched by her commitment to her community and faith. She was actively involved with St. Edward's Church in Providence during the 1980s and early 90s, serving on the social guild and various other committees. A devout Catholic, Marjorie found joy in attending daily mass, often followed by breakfast with her loving husband, Joseph, during their retirement years. For many years, Marjorie enjoyed spending time with her former classmates at events organized by the RI Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
Marjorie was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a proud grandmother. She cherished every moment spent with her granddaughter, Emma Murphy, and was deeply involved in the lives of her three sons. Her love for family was evident in all she did, and her legacy of care and compassion lives on through them.
Marjorie's love for music was another significant aspect of her life. She had a particular fondness for country music and religious hymns, and she especially loved attending Christmas mass. These moments filled her with joy and brought her closer to her faith and family.
She is survived by her two sons, Christopher B. Murphy, with whom she lived, and Martin J. Murphy and his wife Susan and their daughter Emma of Narragansett. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Joseph L. Murphy, III, as well as her siblings, Dorothy Freed, Ann Hassett, and John F. Mullooly.
