Maria Eduarda (Senra) Couto, 80, of Warwick, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday morning October 31, 2024, at West View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the beloved wife of Jose Dinis Couto, they had been married for fifty-seven years.
Born in Rabo de Peixe, Sao Miguel, Azores, a daughter of the late Agostinho and Olga (Brum) Senra. She attended nursing school in Ponta Delgada. She immigrated to the United States in 1966. She was a machine operator with Leviton Mfg. for thirty years before retiring. She and her husband owned and operated Natick Pizza & Restaurant, in West Warwick, for thirteen years.
Maria’s most loved role was a wife, mother, and Vavo. Faith and family were very important to her. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Anthony’s Church, and taught her daughters the importance of Mass and prayer. She was a lector and Eucharistic minister for many years. She was also a member and President of the Holy Rosary Sodality, an association her mother helped found.
Maria enjoyed cooking (not baking), and entertaining lots of family and friends, especially at Thanksgiving. She loved spending time outside in her yard, nurturing all her beautiful flowers, and making special arrangements for The Blessed Mother and St. Anthony statues she adored. She was a talented poet and created many amazing pieces that she shared and had published. Maria and her husband were also founding members of the Irmandade do Senhor Bom Jesus, da vila de Rabo de Peixe.
Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Philomena “Mena” Biagioni (John), and Denise Backman (Greg) and four grandchildren, Marissa, Giovanni, Andrew, and Nathaniel. She also leaves a sister, Teresa DeCastro (Jose J.) of West Palm Beach, Florida, a brother, Tony Senra (Donna) of West Warwick, a sister-in-law, Maria Jose Senra (Jose A.) of West Warwick, and brother-in-law Eusebio (Maria Deus) of Mississauga, Canada. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren, all who she loved deeply.
She is predeceased by her parents, her sister Philomena, brother Jose Agostinho, and sister, Zelia Soares.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the amazing caregivers and staff at West View Nursing Home. The love and compassion they gave to Maria and the family will never be forgotten.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. from the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence St., West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, Sunset Ave., West Warwick, followed by interment at Notre Dame Cemetery, West Warwick. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
