Madeline Smith

SMITH, Madeline, 102, of Larson Drive, Warwick, previously of North Providence, passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 19, 2022 surrounded by her loving family at home. 

Born in Cambridge, MA, she was a daughter of the late Albert W. and Mary A. (Potenza) Smith.  She lived in North Providence for sixty-five years before moving to Warwick three years ago.

Madeline was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Rhode Island Hospital for many years until retiring in 1982.  Madeline was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and her enjoyments included cooking, gardening, sewing and had an “eye for antiques”.  She was a hardworking, independent and strong willed woman who loved her family.

She is survived by a son, Albert E. Proffitt, III and his wife Elizabeth (Forde)  with whom she lived; two grandchildren, Albert F. Proffitt and his wife Lindsay in New Jersey and Cynthia Proffitt and her husband Jesse Alexandre of North Providence; two great grandchildren, Sadie Alina and Raegan Grace Proffitt and many nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Herbert Smith, Sgt. Albert W. Smith, Jr., Walter Smith, Raymond Smith, Phyllis Amantea, Leila Mattera, Ethel Neri, Bernice Beardsworth and Helen Galno.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday, January 28, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in North Burial Ground Cemetery, 5 Branch Avenue, Providence (please gather at the main entrance of the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. and we will proceed together to the gravesite).  Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.  A Memorial Service at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 50 Orchard Avenue, Providence will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 2:00 p.m..  In lieu of flowers, contributions to Beacon-Amedisys Hospice 1130 Ten Rod Road Suite A205 North Kingstown RI 02852 in her memory would be appreciated.  Information and condolences please visit: www.PrataGallogly.com
