Julia Carano Obituary

Julia M. Carano (Saviano), 86 of Norwich passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 after a brief illness.

She was the beloved wife of Joseph A. Carano for 53 years, who predeceased her in January 2014.  Julia was born November 1, 1936 in Fall River MA, daughter of the late Vincent and Gulia Santulli-Saviano of Bristol, RI.

She earned a BA Degree in Education from the University of Rhode Island graduating in 1958.  In her professional years she was a teacher at Norwich Free Academy, Director of Norwich Adult Education Home and Family Program and Director of the Child and Adult Care Food Program for TVCCA.

Throughout the years Julia volunteered her time at the William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich Arts Center, Spirit of Broadway Theatre, CRIS Radio as a reader for the Blind & Print Handicapped, FISH-Friends in Service to Humanity, Norwich Charter Member and RSVP-Retired Senior Friendly Visitor Program.

She was the loving mother of Gina M. Carano from Uncasville, CT, Carl J. Carano and his wife Colleen of Waterford, CT, and the late Cynthia A. Carano.  Cherished grandmother of Joseph R. Carano, and sister to predeceased siblings Vincent J. Saviano of Bristol, RI, Gabriel A. Saviano, MD, of Norwalk, CT and Lucia Morrison of Bristol, RI.

Julia enjoyed gardening, cooking, following UCONN women’s basketball, going to concerts at Mohegan Sun, and spending time watching sunsets at her summer home on Hog Island, as well as spending time with family and friends.

A celebration of life and committal service will be held at The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 12:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Cynthia A. Carano Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Community Foundation of Eastern CT, 68 Federal Street, New London, CT 06320.
