John Pacheco, CRNA Obituary

PACHECO, CRNA, John J., 71, formerly of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away, Saturday evening, September 3, 2022 at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Christina L. (Pimental) Pacheco and John Pacheco.

John grew up on Clyde Street in West Warwick as a child and then on Knight Street and attended the former St. Anthony’s School graduating in 1965.  He graduated from West Warwick High School in 1969 and graduated from RI School of Practical Nursing in 1972, received an A.A. from Rhode Island Junior College in 1973 initially started there in 1969.  He continued his nursing studies in 1974 at Salve Regina University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in biology in 1976. From 1972 thru 1982, he worked as a LPN/RN at the former RI Medical Center General Hospital, LP Building and in 1979 transferred over to the IMH and worked as a psych nurse in adult and adolescent units.  While still working nights there, he started nurse anesthesia training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1981, graduating in 1983 from the two year diploma program.  He worked at St. Joseph’s and Fatima Hospitals as a Nurse Anesthetist for many years and in 1989 he received his Master of Science degree for Rhode Island College.  He also worked in the emergency room at Kent Hospital and taught at CCRI, Warwick Campus in the Biology department from 1990-2000 as adjunct instructor.  In 2000 he moved to Fort Pierce, Florida as nursing director in the emergency room for one year and moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where he lived for twenty years and worked as nursing supervisor at Kindred Hospital, Bay Area until 2008.  From 2005-2015 he also was adjunct instructor at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa teaching medical courses and anatomy in the Medical Coding department.  Toward the end of his nursing career he was Case Manager at Bayfront Medical Center and in 2008through 2021 he was an appeals nurse reviewer for Wellcare/Centene Insurance Company in Tampa.  He was an organist at several churches in Rhode Island and loved the beaches and beautiful places in St. Petersburg.  He returned home to Rhode Island a month ago.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn L. Pacheco and her spouse Suzette; his partner of ten years, Michael Elliott of Tampa, FL; two uncles, Antonio Pimental and Thomas Pimental and many cousins in Rhode Island and the Azores and valued colleagues throughout the years.
