Gloria M. (Barber) Chaput

CHAPUT, Gloria M., (Barber), 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 14, 2023, at West View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in West Warwick.

Gloria’s family is incredibly grateful to the West View staff for their care the past six years.

She was the beloved wife of the late Mark E. Chaput and mother of her devoted daughter Mary-Anne T. Messier (husband Mark) of Coventry.

Born in West Warwick, Gloria was a daughter of the late Arthur and Eva (Gagnon) Barber. She was sister to the late Vivian Coutu (husband Norman). Gloria was a proud lifelong resident of West Warwick.

Gloria was known as Mémère to her most adored and cherished grandchildren, Danielle Messier and Mark Messier, Jr., both of Coventry.

A devout Catholic, Gloria was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, where she often attended Mass. She was a member of Union of Prayer.

Gloria retired from Kenny Mfg. and worked for various textile mills in the Pawtuxet Valley over the years, where she met dear lifelong friends. She enjoyed going out to eat with friends, and they relished cocktail hour in each other’s homes. Her daughter Mary-Anne even convinced Gloria and her closest friends to vacation in Disney World in 1993.

Mémère’s greatest joy in life was watching her grandchildren grow and prosper, as her blue eyes lit up when they entered the room. She enjoyed family holidays and delighted in watching the youthful energy of her grandkids and their seven cousins.

Known to most family members simply as Mémère, she is remembered as a genuinely sweet lady who always greeted others with an authentic warm smile. Gloria conveyed the innocence and virtues of the 1950’s throughout her long life.

She helped others in any way she could, driven by her deep faith. Mémère is as gentle a soul as we could hope to meet. Her legacy lives on through her greatest pride and joy – her grandchildren, Danielle and Mark.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 8:30-9:30 am in the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saints John and James Church, 20 Washington, West Warwick.  Interment will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
