George Chretien Obituary

George G. Chretien, 96, of Coventry, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Rhode Island Hospital.

He was the beloved husband of the late Exilda T. (Loiselle) Chretien. They had been married for 53 years before her passing in 2009. Born in Fall River, MA a son of the late Mathias and Melida (Desjardin) Chretien. He was a resident of Coventry for most of his life.

He is survived by his children, Dennis Chretien (Mary Jo), Robert Chretien, Claire Fortier (Jim), Jeanne Chretien, Norman Chretien, Donald Chretien (Karen), Janet Baker (Jim) and Paul Chretien (Darlene); a sister, Edna Beaulieu and seven grandchildren, Justine Anaya (Gavin), Julia Chretien, Kayla Chretien (Jakob), Eric Fortier, Drew Chretien (Jen), Emily Chretien (Kelly) and Michelle Leach (Brad) and several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Rita Martineau, Henry, Lucien, Roger, Colette and Georgette Chretien.

George was a Components Engineer with Raytheon Technologies in Portsmouth, RI for thirty-five years before retiring. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a communicant of SS. John and James Parish in West Warwick where he was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and recently honored as one of its longest serving members. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and the parish choir. George especially enjoyed taking, developing and hand colorizing his own photos and original photo Christmas cards. Other hobbies included playing Double Deck Rummy, taking walks especially in the snow, and Wii bowling. He loved classic movies, big band music, British television, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and coffee ice cream. He was happiest when surrounded by his friends, children and grandchildren celebrating every milestone, birthday and holiday.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence St., West Warwick followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in SS. John and James Church, Washington St., West Warwick. Following Mass, military honors will be accorded outside church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, SS. John and James Chapter, 20 Washington Street, West Warwick, RI 02893 in his memory would be appreciated.
