Daniel Francis Cahill, Jr., 82, of New Shoreham, Rhode Island, passed peacefully from this life on November 19, 2023. He was raised in Providence, the youngest of six siblings born to Daniel Francis Cahill, Sr. and Mary (Miley) Cahill. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1959- 1963.
In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased by sisters Jean Marie Cahill, Ann Patricia “Pat” Cahill Paolilli, and Dorothy Cahill Laughter, and brothers-in-law Richard Paolilli, Lloyd Laughter, and Ernest Sherman, Jr. Dan is survived by sisters Mary Cahill Laughter of Johnston, Rhode Island, Eleanor Cahill Sherman of South Windsor, Connecticut, with whom he made his home for the last two months of his life, and many nieces and nephews. His Block Island friends were like a second family to him.
Known for his penchant for wearing mismatched socks as well as for his seemingly endless energy, Dan lived on Block Island for nearly 40 years. He was the manager and “backbone” of McGovern’s Yellow Kittens Tavern for more than 30 of those years, where he booked acts such as Jonathan Edwards, Taj Mahal, and James Cotton. Before moving to BI in 1984, Dan was known by many as the “Mayor of Misquamicut,” where, through his own M.O.M. Productions, he brought acts such as Willie Dixon, Little Walter Horton, Eight to the Bar, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Johnny Nicholas, and Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Rhode Island shore. He once rode his bicycle from Seattle to San Francisco, where he met Neil Young and spent some time with Jerry Garcia. Dan was a singularly unique individual who will be missed and remembered fondly by his family and countless friends. There will be no calling hours. Hoist a glass to Dan’s memory when you can.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Committal Service on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Ann Cemetery Chapel, 72 Church Street, Cranston.
