Constance “Connie” (Lawley) LaRue, 92, of Block Island, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, June 1, 2024 at Westerly Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was the beloved wife of the late George LaRue. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late George and Emily J. (Erickson) Lawley.
Connie had many volunteer positions on the Island. Block Island Chamber of Commerce for over 15 years. Member of the Tourism Council. Chair of and member of the Taxi Commission, Library Commission and midnight Police Dispatcher for what seemed like forever! Connie was one of the founding members of the first animal rescue committee and spent many hours retrieving them from their traps and tending to them at the cat house.
She had the most fun working as the Chair and member of the "Double Ender" Committee organizing the July Fourth festivities! She always made sure that the parade was FUN for residents and visitors alike!
As an only child, she was a bit of a loner who valued her time at home with the dogs and cats above anything else EXCEPT when she was planning 4th of July parades, working at the Chamber, doing overnights as a police dispatcher, contributing to any church dinner or Roll Call dinner that could use her talents, working at Spring Street Gallery, having a drink and a meal with friends or doing whatever was needed to contribute to her BI community. She loved her animals the best but when Gillian Stevens son fell in love with her little cairn Misty, she sent her to live down the street without batting an eye... She loved being married to her 2nd husband George but after 2 marriages and George's death, she spent more than 40 years happily single. She never had children of her own, but over the years, took so many young people into her life that they are too many to count. She was FUNNY, and Irreverent, and loving. She taught more than one young person to swear in what she deemed an appropriate way...as much as she cherished her solitude, at 70 she threw a party that may never be forgotten.
Connie was a blessing to us all and she will be sorely missed by all!
She leaves many loving friends on Block Island including Lois Bendokas and her husband Bill.
