Aroldo Mazzenga Obituary

Aroldo Livio Mazzenga of Wakefield, RI, passed away on December 11th, 2023, at the age of 84. He will finally have his chance to tell God all the things he could be doing better.

Aroldo leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Theresa Cherubino Mazzenga, whom he loved more than words in either Italian or English could express.

Together they shared three loving sons: Joseph (Pam), Gino (Paola), and Mark (Jessica) Mazzenga, four adoring grandchildren, Marcella, Gino Jr., Matteo, and Zoey, and one newly-arrived great-grandchild, Axel– all of whom he referred to as “the baby.”

He was the proud son of the late Giuseppe and Lucia (Vellone) Mazzenga and brother to his predeceased siblings, Vincenzina, Giovanni, Luigi (Gino), Maria, Anna (Nannina), Saverio, Lino, and his surviving sister, Francesca (Checcina).

Aside from his family, he derived strength and purpose from his work. For 45 years, he dedicated himself to D’Ambra Construction and was filled with gratitude for the opportunities that his employer and dear friend, Michael D’Ambra, provided.

He was impressive at everything. His skill, imagination, vision, stubbornness, and generosity were monumental. You could not compliment any of his possessions because he would insist you take them (which was tempting when he received a cashmere sweater for Christmas). When not tinkering in the garage, he could be found in his prized garden muttering, “This year there’s no tomatoes.” (They eventually came.)

At 17 years old, not knowing a word of English, Aroldo took a leap of faith and left his family in Pontecorvo, Italy, to seek better prospects. Recounting the story, he once asked, “Did I do that? Maybe it was somebody else?”

It wasn’t somebody else. It was you, Aroldo/Dad/Nonno. You did hard things– and made them look easy.
