Bettye Maynard Obituary

Bettye L. (Adams) Maynard, 94, formerly of West Warwick and East Greenwich, RI, passed away at the age of 94 on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Tender Personal Care Home in Lawrenceville, GA. She lived her last years in Georgia.

She was born August 1, 1923 in Oklahoma City, OK and raised in Wichita Falls, TX.  Bettye was the daughter of the late J. A. and Nell (DeGroat) Adams. She is predeceased by her brothers, A.C. (Jack) Adams and James R. Adams, and her sisters, Mary Grace and Jean Wetsel.

Bettye was the wife of the late Dr. Mozart Maynard. They were married February 14, 1946 in West Warwick, RI.

She was one of the first employees of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX and was employed by the B-29 School in Salina, Kansas and Lowry Field, Colorado.  In 1944, Bettye joined the Navy (WAVES) and was stationed at Sampson, NY.  She was discharged as Y2C in September 1945.

Bettye volunteered more than 2000 hours at Kent County Hospital and the Kent Nursing Home over several years.  She was affiliated with For Art’s Sake School of Fine Art and her paintings were shown in several local galleries. She and her husband were long-time members of Potowomut Golf Club, where they enjoyed a passion for golf.

Bettye is survived by six children: Michael Maynard of Pembroke Pines, FL, Marc Maynard of Walpole, MA, Charlotte Backer of East Greenwich, RI, Carl Maynard of Lilburn, GA, Carole Maynard of Quincy, MA and Norman Maynard of Silver Spring, MD. 

She is survived by 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and was the grandmother of the late Zachary Bates Maynard.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a committal service followed by military honors at a time to be announced in the beginning of August in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter.
