Sister Mary Edwin English, RSM

ENGLISH, Sister Mary Edwin, 94, a Sister of Mercy, died on March 9, 2018 at Grace Barker Health in Warren.  Born in Providence, Sister was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Curran) English.  She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1942 and professed final vows in 1948.

Sister’s early ministries were at St. Teresa School in Pawtucket and the former St. Aloysius Home in Greenville.  In 1958 Sister began a nine-year ministry at Mount St. Rita Convent where she was part of the kitchen staff, preparing meals for the professed sisters and the scores of novices and postulants entering the Sisters of Mercy.

Sister’s longest ministry began in 1967 when she and her friend, the late Sister Mary Joeline, arrived at St. Mary of the Bay Parish in Warren.  For the next 49 years, Sister shared her generous caring spirit and her dry humor, while providing pastoral visits, religious education, and a ministry of prayer and presence to hundreds of women, men, and young people throughout the Warren and Bristol area.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11:00 am in St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland.  Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:40 a.m.  Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister’s memory to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.  Information and condolences please visit: www.galloglyfuneralhome.com
