Sister Mary Mahoney, RSM

Mahoney, Sister Mary, RSM (formerly Sister Mary Thomasita), 86,  a Sister of Mercy for 68 years, passed on February 8, 2018 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.  Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Rocray) Mahoney.

Sister is survived by her sister, Helen McGrane, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members, as well as her family in Mercy.  She was the sister of the late John and Thomas Mahoney.

Sister Mary’s years in active ministry included elementary education and administration, as well as adult religious education and parish pastoral ministry throughout Rhode Island.  Sister was one of the foundresses of the House of Faith in St. Patrick’s Parish in Providence, as well as Mary’s House.  She was an original member of the Charismatic movement in Rhode Island.  Mary is remembered as a caring, faith-filled woman who sang beautifully, laughed heartily, and was always ready for a game of cards.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Vianney Church, Cumberland.  Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:40 a.m.  Interment will be at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister’s memory to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 or Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.  Information and condolences, please visit: www.galloglyfuneralhome.com
