CRAWFORD, Jean Shreve (Schumacher), oldest child of the late Paul Erwin Schumacher and Lillian Shreve Mayo, of Ansonia, CT, left to be with her “darling Bill” in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on Saturday, September 12, 2015.  

She was preceded in passing by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, William H. Crawford Jr., CDR, USN, Ret. formerly of Branford, CT. and most recently Portsmouth, RI.  She is survived by sisters, Barbara (Jack-deceased) Lewis of Miami, FL, Lynn (Joe) Ekelund of Monterrey, CA, brothers, John (Ruth) Schumacher of Essex, CT,  Jarvis (Pat) Schumacher of Sequim, WA;  sons William H. III (Lynn) of Pensacola, FL; Stephen (Faye) of Cincinnati, OH; Peter (Kathy) of Hull, MA; Jeffrey (Marnie) of North Kingstown, RI; daughters Susan (David) Schaller of Block Island, RI; Sarah (Bruce) Herritt of North Palm Beach, FL; Melissa (William) Carty of Portsmouth, RI; grandchildren Melissa Crawford, Michael (Karen) Crawford, Jennifer (Alec) Finlay; Stephanie, Brant, and Kiri Crawford; James (Rose) Schaller; Lisa (Chris) Robb; Molly Crawford; Haley (Ryne) Malone, Kelsey (Zach) Burke; Carolyn, Clara, and Sam Crawford; great-grandchildren, Grace, Alec L. Guy II, William Gibson Finlay; Amelia and Cooper Crawford, Andrew Schaller, and Macy Robb. She was the sister of the late Paul Schumacher. 

As a “Navy Wife” raising seven children, Mrs. Crawford miraculously managed to be actively involved in activities and organizations at all of their Navy duty locations:  PTA Waterford, CT; Girl Scouts Groton, CT; Chair, USN-USL Officer’s Wives Club, New London, CT; Cub Scouts, Westfield, NJ; President, Officer’s Wives Club SUBDIV 42, Key West, FL;  Charter Member Mt Vernon, VA DAR; President, Catholic Counsel of Women, Mt Vernon, VA; Charter Member, Middletown, RI Historical Society; Quilting Instructor, Swinburne School, Newport RI; President, Ladies Guild St Andrews Catholic Church, Block Island, RI; 10 Year volunteer, Island Free library, Block Island, RI; 10 Year volunteer, Lyme Disease testing, Block Island, RI; Eucharistic Minister/Lector, St Andrew Catholic Church, Block Island, RI and the Post 36 American Legion Auxilary. And in the last three years, she enjoyed her many friends at the Atria Aquidneck Place playing bingo and especially bocce of which she became quite skilled! Mrs. Crawford will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Bill, on Block Island. 

The family wishes to honor their parent’s last request that, in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to either “The Mary ‘D’ Fund”, PO Box 323, or “The Island Free Library”, PO Box 1830, both on Block Island, RI, 02807.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 12:30 pm in St. Andrew Church, Chapel St., Block Island followed by a reception for all.  Information and condolences please visit: www.henault-gallogly.com
