Frederick M. Kowal, Sr.

November 13, 1926 ~ April 10, 2016 (age 89) 89 Years Old


KOWAL, Frederick M, Sr., 89, of West Warwick, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Coventry Health Center.

He was the beloved husband of Helen B. (Tomasik) Kowal; they were married for 65 years.  Born and raised in Cumberland, a son of the late Wladyslaw and Marya (Partyka) Kowal.

Mr. Kowal graduated from Cumberland High School in 1944.  He was employed by the U.S. Navy as a machinist instructor at Quonset Naval Air Station until the base closed in 1974, afterwards working at Electric Boat as a toolmaker until he retired.  He was a communicant at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, loved gardening and was an avid Red Sox fan.  He was a member of the Polish Falcons of America and AARP Chapter 2210, enjoying many trips and events with the group.

Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, John and his wife Julita of Mansfield, MA, Frederick Jr. and his wife Sue Ann of Arroyo Grande, CA, Theodore and his wife Linda of Milford, MA, and Matthew of West Warwick; a daughter, Pamela Rossi and her husband Scott; seven grandchildren, Christopher and Mark Rossi, Samuel, Melissa, Sophia, Jacob, and Julia Kowal and many nieces and nephews.  Frederick was one of nine children. He is survived by a sister, Frances Salvas of Coventry and a brother, John Kowal of Vancleave, MS.  He was the brother of the late Steven, Frank, and Edward Kowal, Rose Kinder, Stasia Nyzio, and Wanda Ritchie.

His funeral will be held Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 9:00 am from the HENAULT-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 5 Eddy St., West Warwick.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Czenstochowa Church, 445 Washington St, Coventry.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich.  Visiting hours Wednesday 5-7 pm.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Kowal’s memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, One Catamore Blvd., East Providence, RI 02914 or the Hope Alzheimer’s Center, 25 Brayton Ave., Cranston, RI 02920.
