GALLAGHER, Alice E., 92, of Narragansett, R.I., died peacefully in her sleep at Saint Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich, R.I. on Monday, December 18, 2017. She is not survived by either a husband or children.
Born in Fenagh, County Leitrim, Ireland on September 19, 1925, Alice Gallagher was the youngest of four children of Thomas and Mary (Murray) Gallagher. She and her two older brothers, Edward (d. 2009) and John (d. 1997) immigrated to the United States while her older sister, Eileen (d. 2012) remained in County Leitrim. Alice Gallagher lived in Rhode Island for the rest of her life.
A devoted Catholic, Alice Gallagher worked as the housekeeper for her cousin, the Rev. Msgr. William F. Murray, during his term as Director of Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in Narragansett (1973 - 1979) and his term as Pastor of St. Clare Church in Misquamicut (1979 - 1992). During that time and from her retirement onward, Alice Gallagher was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Narragansett.
Though Alice Gallagher never had children of her own, the care of children played a central part in her life. Employed as a nanny for the Danforth family from 1959 to 1973, Alice Gallagher was considered a second mother to Murray and Stephanie Danforth. She also took an active role in the lives of her brother John's three children and her sister Eileen's six children and, later, their children as well. Though she will be missed by all these families, the emotional foundations she provided them with will always remain.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 8:00-9:00 am in the HENAULT-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 5 Eddy Street, West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Road, Narragansett. Interment will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, the family of Alice Gallagher asks that donations be made to the Saint Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. Information and condolences please visit: www.henault-gallogly.com
